CAAZ Steps Up Refurbishment of Vic Falls Airport
Zimbabwe: CAAZ Steps Up Refurbishment of Vic Falls Airport The Herald (Harare) January 9, 2007 Posted to the web January 9, 2007 Harare THE Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe has moved to speed up completion of the refurbishment of Victoria Falls Airport with the authority tendering the construction of ground and passenger service infrastructure at the port. Victoria Falls Airport is among the country's air terminals that have been approved for refurbishment and extension in anticipation of an increased inflow of visitors to the region for the 2010 World Cup soccer finals in neighbouring South Africa. The upgrading is also in step with the thrust by the Government to improve communication in the country in line with recommendations of the National Economic Development Priority Pro-gramme. It is also part of moves to rebuild and consolidate Zimbabwe's reviving tourism sector that had been heavily hit by unwarranted negative publicity from the country's detractors. According to the tender document, the CAAZ has requested companies willing to construct particular sections of the airport to apply through the State Procu-rement Board. In an earlier interview, CAAZ managing director Mr David Chawota said all targets set would be adhered as the country seeks to improve infrastructure at air terminals. "All improvement projects at the country's air terminals are earmarked for completion by August this year," Mr Chawota said. "To speed the completion of the airport refurbishment programme, CAAZ is procuring in bulk materials required for the work while contractors are working overtime where resources are available to ensure speedy progress and completion of the projects," he said. Mr Chawota said work at Harare International Airport was over 50 percent complete "The work has seen two ends of the runaway and taxiways completed, including installation of the airfield ground lighting system," he said. He said the upgrading of Buffalo Range Airport -- which entails the rehabilitation and extension of the runway to accommodate larger aircraft and to make the port one of the gateways into the planned Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park -- would commence as soon as the tendering process was finalised. "Work at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Airport is now 75 percent complete. Finishing touches on partitioning, plumbing and electrical installations are currently underway with completion earmarked for April this year," he said. The refurbishment of the country's terminals would also boost Air Zimbabwe's bid to woo foreign airlines to utilise the country airports and its intended partnerships with other airlines. cheers RS
