Can anyone confirm this? Sunday Times 10 Sept reported on daily EK on DXB-CPT route? When will this start?

I think they have a codeshare withh SAA on their twice a day flights to JNB onward to DUR/CPT

Yes, they codeshare with Emirates. EK operates the flights with Boein 777s. The Emirates website does not give direct flights between CPT and DXB and neither does SAA's. But I don't think that the codeshare will be able to exist much longer, now that SAA is in the Star Alliance. So it could be possible that Emirates will fly into Cape Town one day... Cheers, Felix

This is a very interesting arrangement which will continue despite of SA joining Star Alliance since EK is not a member of any alliance (members of Star can have billaterals with any non alliance members). The codeshare is only one-way, ie. SA have their code on EK flights but not the otherway round! Connecting passengers are just interline! EK flies DBX-JNB twice daily with 777-300 - although very little of that traffic is actually going to DBX but connecting to Europe, Asia and even Australia - and soon to the US! EK are likely to be one of the first, if not the first A 380 carrier into SA since it is constrained by the BASA between SA and the UAE which limits to 16 flights per week (another reason why Etihad has been limited in their services to SA - only 2 times per week). EK have been wanting to fly into Cape Town for years but have not been able to get rights! SA will do their utmost to stop EK getting more rights simply because all the traffic that they carry is comepeting directly with SA on their trunk routes, to Europe, the US, Australia, etc. SA cannot compete with EK on price simply because EK have much lower fuel costs and do not charge (taxes) connecting passengers in DBX. Furthermore, EK does not pay corporate taxes & has huge economies of scale!

You have a point Evanb, SAA can codeshare with EK as long as EK is non alliance carrier
