Ethiopian Airlines chooses GEnx engine
has purchased GE Aviation's GEnx engine to power its fleet of 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The order is valued at $330 million. Delivery is scheduled to begin in 2008. Ethiopian Airlines will be the first in Africa to fly the GEnx-powered Dreamliner, Roger Seager, GE Aviation's vice president of sales said in a news release. The GEnx engine is the sole jet engine with a front fan case and fan blades made of composites, which provide for greater engine durability, weight reduction and lower operating costs. GE Aviation, based in Evendale, develops and manufactures jet engines for commercial and military aircraft. It is a unit of General Electric (NYSE: GE), headquartered in Connecticut

Well done ET. I guess all their jet planes are powered by GE engines which will allow them to reap commonality benefits in terms of mx. Are the GENX and RR Trent 1000s (not sure about the trent) the only powerplants for the dreamliners? Cheers, Walter.

good for ET I wonder what powerplant will KQ choose for their dreamliner KQ will probably go for the RR Trents, given that the dreamliners will be replacing the 767s (which I think are all GE powered). The trents will also fit in well with the 772ERs which are also RR powered and given the fact that RR has provided an engine maintenance facility (i think this came with the package for selecting RR to power the 772ERs) at their Embakasi base. Cheers, Walter.
