Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi is currently having some refurbishment works being undertaken with the objective being to achieve FAA category one status to enable Kenya Airways launch direct flights to the USA from Nairobi. The main objective of this status is to completely separate international and domestic passenger traffic. The work is being undertaken by the Kenya Airports Authority with a substantial investment from Kenya Airways as well. Currently, the airport has three terminals. Terminals one and two handle international departures whilst terminal three handles domestic departures (Terminal 3 is also used by El Al to handle their flights as they involve increased security. This minimises inconveniences to other international flights). There is also a VVIP terminal (presidential pavillion) that is used to receive dignitaries e.g. visiting heads of state and governments etc. It is also used by the Kenyan President for all his international departures & arrivals. Adjacent to JKIA is the old Nairobi airport, formely know as Embakasi Airport. They share the same runway with JKIA but the terminal buildings are located on either side of the runway. Currently, embakasi houses an air force base, the Kenya Airways corporate head office as well as their engineering and maintenance bases. Under the refurbishment plan, the air force unit at Embakasi will relocate all their operations to the Moi Air Base a couple of miles from the Airport in the East of Nairobi. The old airport terminal buildings and baggage facilities will be refurbished and upgraded. This refurbished terminal will handle all domestic flights to and from JKIA. The current domestic terminal (terminal 3) will also be upgraded and refurbished to become the the third international departure terminal at JKIA. This will add a couple of more gates for international traffic. The perceived future of JKIA is to have four terminals for international trafffic and one to cater for domestic traffic. There is also talk of constructing an additional runway but this is still at its infancy stages. The refurbishment of the airport also involves upgrading the lounges and waiting areas for passengers in transit. Kenya Airways recently unveiled their new lounge for their premier & business class passengers at the JKIA with facilities comparable to any major international airport in the world. Facilities include wireless internet connectivity. I will search for a link of the story and paste it in this thread a little later on. If your dad will be travelling business or premier, then this will be one lounge to savour. WHile in transit, he could while his time away at the bar, shop at the various duty free shops as well as relax & do some spotting. He could get places with excellent views of the apron area as well as the runway especially for incoming flights. I hope I ahve provided sufficient insight into JKIA and I trust that he will enjoy his transit time at JKIA.

As promised, here is the story and the source is http://www.kenya-airways.com/root/pages/English/Home.asp then surf to corporate & investor news. KENYA AIRWAYS LAUNCHES NEW BUSINESS CLASS LOUNGE Nairobi, December 15th 2004… Kenya Airways today launched a new lounge at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s arrivals hall, exclusive to full-fare business class passengers. The lounge, which cost Kenya Airways Kshs 16 million to build, offers amenities such as showers and wireless Internet connectivity in a setting tastefully decorated with the passenger’s comfort in mind. Speaking at the launch of the lounge, Titus Naikuni, MD & CEO, Kenya Airways, said that the lounge was fully financed by the airline to enhance the image of Kenya Airways and JKIA. The objective is to enhance the customer experience at the airport. The airline plans to upgrade its existing frequent flyer lounge soon to ensure it is in line with global standards and trends. Hon. I read today that Kenya Airways is going to build a new maintenance hangar for its boeing 777s at the old Embakasi airport. Felix Very true. Here's the story: Kenya Airways builds Sh536m hangar Story by NATION Reporter Publication Date: 3/10/2005 Kenya Airways is building a Sh536 million aircraft servicing unit at Embakasi in Nairobi. The hangar will accommodate large aircraft and is designed for the airline's latest plane, the Boeing 777. It will save the firm the millions of shillings spent on servicing its aircraft in Europe and the US. Managing director Titus Naikuni said yesterday while touring the site that Kenya Airways is to take delivery of two more Boeing 777s – one in April and the other in June. Kenya Airways managing director Titus Naikuni (second right) with officials of the contractors (from left) Mr Jean Claude Clemeur, Mr Mark Langbein and the airline's properties manager, Mr Anthony Moire during an inspection of the Sh536 million hangar yesterday. Photo/Fredrick Onyango Mr Naikuni was accompanied by Mr Mark Langbein, the chief operations officer of the contractor, Strarch International, consultant engineer Jean Claude Clemeur of Gibb East Africa and the airline's manager in charge of properties and facilities, Mr Anthony Moire. Mr Naikuni said he was happy that Kenya Airways had begun the project, adding that it would also help other airlines in the region. To service an aircraft takes up to three weeks, and costs close to Sh4,000 an hour, according to Mr Moire. A plane that is over five years old requires service every three months. But the service could be cheaper if carried out locally (about Sh600), Mr Moire said. Kenya Airways will also save on the cost of flying its planes to the current servicing areas. The hangar will be built with the latest modern technology, never before used in Africa, Mr Naikuni said. Known as stretch-arch, it involves building a hangar with a flat roof 12 metres high, which is then pressed progressively into a dome. Mr Naikuni said Kenya Airways picked the technology because it was faster and more cost-effective. He said: "Actual experience shows that this facility can be completed in approximately 25 per cent less time and 30 per cent less the pre-engineered systems. Does the NBO Airport have a hotel for passengers in transit? My flight from London arrives at 9pm at night and my flight out to Tanzania leaves the next morning at 9am? If there is a hotel, how do I reserve in advance? If you are flying KQ, you will probably spend the night at either the Hilton or Inter-Continental hotel in city. KQ will cater for all the arrangements and layovers. There is currently no hotel at the NBO airport. Cheers, Walter
