Nairobi to host regional aviation conference A regional aviation safety conference opens in Nairobi tomorrow, bringing together International Air Transport Association (IATA) participants from Africa and Indian Ocean (AFI) region.
Top on the agenda are plans to reduce by 50 per cent air accidents by the year 2010.
A statement from IATA said for the region to achieve the set safety goals, it was essential that all aviation stakeholders in the region act in a co-ordinated manner.
The statement said the summit would rally stakeholders to embark on a co-ordinated programme through sharing of AFI safety records.
It will also review the strategy for addressing issues of concern so as to enhance safety in Africa.
"The fact that this event has been organised by Africans is a demonstration of the continent’s commitment to putting adequate measures in place to enhance air safety," said IATA regional director for Africa, Peter Chikumba.
The air safety conference is also expected to make recommendations that will be tabled at next month’s Africa Union and NEPAD conference to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The African Aviation Safety Summit has been co-sponsored by Kenya Airways, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
It will bring together aviation decision makers, chief executives officers of Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA’s), aircraft manufacturers, airport and regulatory authorities, air navigation service providers, and airlines.
