Nigerias Airstrips needing to meet Civil Aviation Standards Hi there,
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on 16 February approved a memorandum on the regulation of airstrips in Nigeria.
Numbering about 200, the airstrips will henceforth be required to pay specified government fees while their activities will be subject to full security checks and clearance in order to forestall sabotage or mishaps.
Aviation Minister, Malam Isa Yaguda explained that most of the airstrips, aerodromes and helipads are owned by multinational oil companies. He also noted that their facilities fall short of standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The companies are:
- Chevron Nigeria Limited (26 airstrips)
- Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) (68 airstrips)
- Mobil Producing Unlimited (76 airstrips)
- TotalElfina (10 airstrips)
- Agip (13 airstrips)
- Conoil (one airstrip).
Operating the airstrips would be considered illegal by Government if stipulated fees are not paid.
Yuguda also pointed out that some of the airstrips are used for smuggling, gun running and other forms of economic sabotage.
In a related move, the FEC has given approval for the installation of a N241 million landing equipment at the Akanu Ibiam Airport in Enugu. The approval is part of the decision by Government to upgrade and rehabilitate 22 airports in the country.
Cheers,
Felix

What type of aircraft can these airstrips handle?
Africaspotter- 02-19-2005
Well, I suppose its mainly for general aviation. Depends on the airstrip I think...

Felix

Hi there,
It is now confirmed that the Government will spend Sh600 million this year to rehabilitate three airstrips in the country.
Speaking yesterday at a two-day African Aviation Safety Summit at the Hilton Hotel, Nairobi, Transport Permanent Secretary, Gerrishon Ikiara, said the Government has currently budgeted for Garissa, Isiolo and Mandera airstrips.
Cheers,
Felix
