SAA North America
SAA's last ever flight (for now at least), SA210, from Atlanta and Ilha do Sal landed at Jo'burg 1 July 2006. The flight was operated by A340-600, ZS-SNH. This brings to an end of an era of many years of SAA operations to the Cape Verde Island of Ilha do Sal. In the past the island was an important refuelling stop for flights to the USA and to Europe when SAA was forced to fly around the bulge of Africa. SAA is dropping Atlanta for daily flights to Washington to be served via Dakar with A340's. Up till now, the Washington flights have been operated 4 times weekly with B747-400's via Accra. Accra will now be served 3 times per week from JNB with A342's. (On one of the days the flight will continue on to Abidjan). The first SAA A340-600 to land in Washington will have been ZS-SNC which operated a special flight SA3207 outbound on the evening of 30 June 2006. ZS-SNH was due to operate the first official SA207 this evening (1st July). In the interim SAA has increased capacity to JFK by changing equipment from A343 to A346. SAA's first flight to New York with an A340-600 would have landed at JFK 3 July 2006. The first ever SAA A346 to land at JFK was their Star Alliance logo scheme aircraft, ZS-SNC. That same aircraft had two days earlier become the first SAA A346 to visit both Dakar and Washington. With the Atlanta flight having been dropped, SAA is now offering a daily A346 service to both IAD and JFK via Dakar. The A343's that were previously assigned to the JFK route will now operate daily to HKG.

Fuel Stop
13 July 2006 SAA adds fuel stop in Ilha do Sal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAA has added a fuel stop in the Cape Verde islands on all its American operations because of a fuel shortage in Dakar, Senegal due to strike action. Truckers are striking in Dakar making it impossible to transport fuel from refineries to the airport. Instead of cancelling flights to Washington and New York, SAA has added a stop in Ilha do Sal starting from last night, increasing the travel time per sector by three hours. The airline says it will inform all passengers of the added travelling time and will distribute letters explaining the situation. SAA will monitor and assess the situation on a daily basis.
